Club Notes Sunday, July 3rd, 2016

posted 31 Jul 2016, 12:26 by Jimmy O'Brien

Congratulations to Neil Ewing, Seán Power, Cian Lally and the Sligo team on their All-Ireland football qualifier success against Leitrim at Markievicz Park. Cian was introduced as a second-half substitute late on to get his first taste of senior intercounty championship football. Fair play to Seán too who demonstrated his cross country running pedigree at the Sligo GAA Race Day last Tuesday evening when he was the club’s participant in the EJ Menswear Mile Race.

It was a great day for the Sligo ladies too, and for our club players Michelle McNamara and Rachel Monaghan as they won the Connacht Intermediate football championship title with victory over Leitrim in Castlebar. Well done to all involved.

A big thank you to everybody who helped organiser last Saturday’s U14 football blitz event at Oxfield. Westport GAA Club, St Molaise Gaels and Calry/St Joseph’s were the visiting clubs and an enjoyable day was had by all. Thanks to all our coaches, car park stewards, umpires, catering staff and especially Jimmy Smith, who devised the event.

The Slevin family got a big send-off from our nursery footballers at Oxfield last Saturday morning. We wish Colin, Catriona, Holly and Charlie the best of luck with their big move to Carrick-on-Shannon and hope they’ll be back our way again in the not-too-distant-future. Keep Dad practicising at the football Charlie!

We’re holding a clothing recycling day this Saturday, July 9th from 10am and 2pm at Oxfield and Rosses Point. You can donate your unwanted clothing items/bed linen etc. The drop-off point in Rosses Point is the Promenade car park opposite Harry’s Bar. For more info, contact Aidan O’Reilly on 0879785311.

Tickets for the club’s new Super Lotto Draw are now on sale from club officers. We would appeal to members to support this vital club fundraiser. More info is available on the club’s Facebook page.

On the playing front, the senior men’s team scored a 1-9 to 0-9 win in the Benson Cup at home to St Pat’s last Sunday. After five matches, we currently sit second behind St John’s in the Group A table.

Our junior footballers travel to play Castleconnor in Division 4 this Tuesday evening at 8pm. The boys minor footballers received a walkover in Division 3 of the league last Friday evening against St Pat’s.

The 14 boys footballers are through to the Division 1 Shield final. Their opponents in the decider will be Tourlestrane.

Good luck to Benbulben Gaels U14 hurlers who line out at Markievicz Park on Friday evening in the Shield final against Tourlestrane. The game has an 8:15 throw-in. The U12 hurlers recorded an impressive victory away to Easkey/St Farnan’s last Tuesday evening to move up to second in the league table.

The club extends sympathy to Mickey Brennan and family following the passing of John Brennan recently.
