There was further international recognition for one of our promising club players Oisín O’Reilly, with his recent basketball exploits earning him selection on Ireland U18 basketball team. It is due recognition for the teenager who also helped EJ Sligo All Stars reach the final of the President’s Cup last Saturday with a convincing win over Team Kilkenny in Cork. We would also like extend best wishes to another ‘dual’ player, Cian Lally, who is currently recovering from a broken arm.

Well done to the Sligo ladies footballers who made a winning start to 2017 with victory over NUI Galway in the Connacht Ladies League semi-final last Sunday. The Sligo panel includes club players Michelle McNamara, Rachel Monaghan, Amanda Healy and Sinéad Regan.

Hard luck to Neil Ewing, Seán Power and the Sligo men’s senior footballers who lost out narrowly to Galway at Quigabar in their opening Connacht FDD league fixture. Seán was also part of the Sligo U21 team which recorded an impressive win over Donegal in the North West Cup last Tuesday.

An evening to celebrate the contributions of all the club’s underage footballers and hurlers over the past 12 months will take place place in Rathcormac Hall on Friday, February 3rd at 7pm. This free event is also open to the families and friends of our juvenile players as we acknowledge the commitment and effort of all our underage teams.

We are entering a quiz team in the Ocean FM ‘Pole Position’ radio sports quiz which starts later this month. The quiz is free to enter and is made up of teams of three. The club meeting for January is provisionally scheduled for Monday 30th in Oxfield at 9pm.

Well done to all the underage handballers who represented Drumcliffe Handball Club at the Collooney blitz last Saturday. Handball coaching continues this Saturday morning in Oxfield from 10am. New players (of all ages) are always very welcome.

A workshop for nursery GAA coaches will take place in Summerhill College on Monday, Jan 23rd from 7-9pm. All interested club coaches are encouraged to make every effort to attend.

Date for your diary: The club’s Saturday morning GAA nursery for 2017 will begin on Saturday, March 5th.

Congrats and best wishes to the Smith family on their recent house move to Carney. Our boys U16 manager Jimmy Smith surely has no excuse this year for being late for any Oxfield training sessions!
