The Regan hug

It’s been a landmark week on a number of fronts for DRP.
First to our women’s adult footballers who made history last Sunday morning by qualifying for a first-ever Sligo LGFA senior championship final, thanks to a 2-9 to 2-8 win over St Mary’s at Kent Park. It means the team will contest both the senior final (v St Nathy’s on Oct 14th) AND the intermediate decider (v Eoghan Rua next Sunday, Oct 1st). The intermediate final is fixed for Collooney on Sunday. The throw-in time is now 3PM (changed from 4:15pm).

The club would appreciate plenty of colour (flags and buntings) around the parish for the next couple of weeks – as we enter an exciting period for senior women’s and men’s footballers.

The ‘Regan’ hug after Sunday morning’s historic semi-final win – Happy birthday to Sinead Regan who celebrated her weekend birthday with a win

Our senior men’s footballers also grabbed headlines with their 1-8 to 0-8 win over holders Tourlestrane on Saturday evening at Markievicz Park – a result which qualifies them for a county semi-final against St Molaise Gaels – and which ends Tourlestrane’s 46-game unbeaten championship run in Sligo, stretching back to 2015.

Completing a memorable weekend, our junior men’s footballers qualified for the ‘B’ championship semi-finals with a one-point victory over Tubbercurry in last Sunday’s quarter-final at Oxfield. Niall Collery’s side now play St Farnan’s in the last four.

Our boys U15 footballers (Team Red) are through to the county final following a comprehensive 5-15 to 3-6 win over Shamrock Gaels in the semi last week. The team face Tubbercurry/Cloonacool in the final. Date tbc.

Commiserations to our girls minor footballers who lost their ‘A’ championship play-off to Eoghan Rua last Thursday. That result rules them out of contention for the cup final – but there will still be a Shield final to play for on October 21st.

Good luck to the DRP U13 hurlers who play Easkey in the Plate final (away) on Friday evening.

Our girls U12 footballers (team 1) played their hearts out last Saturday afternoon in Curry in their Sligo Festival of Football Silver Cup final against Eastern Harps. While the game ended in defeat, the team can be proud of their efforts this year. Thanks to all the hard-working coaches, led by Fiona Dixon and Elaine Kenny for all their support and encouragement. The U12 group enjoyed an end-of-season party at Oxfield on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to all the parents and coaches who helped supply the array of goodies.

Our girls U10 All-Stars footballers have a great morning in Kinlough last Saturday as they took part in a three-team blitz, hosted by Melvin Gaels, which also included Dromahair.

Please not that Saturday morning All-Stars coaching for all age groups moves to Oxfield this Saturday, Sept 30th, due to the Sligo Schools Cross Country finals taking place at the Rathcormac NS playing fields. This Saturday’s 9:45am session will be the final one of the session for our younger U7 players – so there’ll be a little party.
Our older 10:45am All-Stars football groups will have a similar end-of-season finale on Saturday week, Oct 7th, back at Rathcormac.
